SHM: connect position, motion and energy

Distinguish speed from acceleration in SHM, use spring-energy fractions and try original self-checks before NEET chapter MCQs.

What you will understand

Predict what happens at the centre and the turning points, use the sign of velocity correctly, and calculate spring energy without confusing a fraction of energy with a fraction of speed. The model is ideal and undamped.

Quick answer: displacement does not specify direction

Measure xx from equilibrium. In the convention x=Acos⁑θx=A\cos\theta, let ΞΈ=Ο‰t+Ο•\theta=\omega t+\phi, with A>0A\gt 0 and Ο‰>0\omega\gt 0. Then v=βˆ’AΟ‰sin⁑θv=-A\omega\sin\theta and a=βˆ’Ο‰2xa=-\omega^2x. A displacement can occur on both halves of a cycle; velocity chooses the branch. At x=0x=0, speed is greatest and acceleration is zero. At x=Β±Ax=\pm A, speed is zero and acceleration magnitude is greatest.

Same displacement, different velocity

With x equals A cos theta and right positive, x equals A/2 can occur at theta pi/3 or 5pi/3 modulo 2pi. At pi/3 velocity is negative; at 5pi/3 velocity is positive. Acceleration is negative in both cases because displacement is positive. The repeated position is not a complete description of the oscillator state.

Worked example: use both initial conditions

Take A=0.10 mA=0.10\,\mathrm m and Ο‰=4 rad sβˆ’1\omega=4\,\mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}}. At t=0t=0, the particle is at x=+0.05 mx=+0.05\,\mathrm m and moving toward increasing xx. From cos⁑ϕ=1/2\cos\phi=1/2, the candidates are Ο€/3\pi/3 and 5Ο€/35\pi/3 modulo 2Ο€2\pi. Since v>0v\gt 0 requires sin⁑ϕ<0\sin\phi\lt 0, choose 5Ο€/35\pi/3. The resulting velocity is +0.203 m sβˆ’1+0.20\sqrt3\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} and acceleration is βˆ’0.80 m sβˆ’2-0.80\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. If the direction were reversed at the same position, the phase would be Ο€/3\pi/3 and acceleration would still be negative.

Use energy as an independent check

For an ideal horizontal mass–spring oscillator, Ο‰=k/m\omega=\sqrt{k/m}. Choose spring potential energy zero at equilibrium: E=12kA2E=\tfrac12 kA^2, U=12kx2U=\tfrac12 kx^2 and K=Eβˆ’UK=E-U. Thus U/E=(x/A)2U/E=(x/A)^2 and K/E=1βˆ’(x/A)2K/E=1-(x/A)^2. Energy gives speed through ∣v∣=Ο‰A2βˆ’x2|v|=\omega\sqrt{A^2-x^2}; it does not decide the sign of velocity.

Compare energy and speed fractions

For an ideal undamped spring oscillator with potential energy zero at equilibrium, K/E and U/E are 1 and 0 at x=0; 0.64 and 0.36 at x=0.6A; and 0 and 1 at x=A. Total energy E is constant. At x=0.6A, speed is 0.8 of maximum speed because speed squared is proportional to kinetic energy.

Worked example: keep metres and joules consistent

A 0.50 kg0.50\,\mathrm{kg} block moves on a frictionless horizontal surface with k=8.0 N mβˆ’1k=8.0\,\mathrm{N\,m^{-1}} and amplitude 0.10 m0.10\,\mathrm m. At x=0.06 mx=0.06\,\mathrm m, Ο‰=4 rad sβˆ’1\omega=4\,\mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}} and E=0.040 JE=0.040\,\mathrm J. Calculate U=0.0144 JU=0.0144\,\mathrm J and K=0.0256 JK=0.0256\,\mathrm J. Then ∣v∣=2K/m=0.32 m sβˆ’1|v|=\sqrt{2K/m}=0.32\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. The energy fraction is K/E=0.64K/E=0.64, while the speed fraction is 0.32/0.40=0.800.32/0.40=0.80. Do not use 0.64 as the speed fraction.

Common mistakes to catch

Zero velocity at a turning point does not imply zero acceleration. Convert centimetres to metres before calculating joules. Potential energy is zero at the chosen equilibrium reference, not universally at every β€œstarting point”. At fixed mm and kk, doubling amplitude doubles maximum speed and quadruples total energy; it leaves the ideal oscillator period unchanged.

Try it yourself 1: at a turning point

At x=+Ax=+A in ideal SHM, which statement holds? A. v=0v=0 and a=0a=0; B. v=0v=0 and a=βˆ’Ο‰2Aa=-\omega^2A; C. speed is maximum.

Reveal the answer

B. The particle reverses direction there. Zero instantaneous velocity does not remove the restoring force. Maximum speed occurs at equilibrium, where acceleration is zero.

Try it yourself 2: change the amplitude

For the same ideal spring and mass, amplitude doubles. How do total energy and maximum speed change? A. Both double; B. energy quadruples and maximum speed doubles; C. both quadruple.

Reveal the answer

B. Energy depends on A2A^2; maximum speed AωA\omega depends linearly on AA because ω\omega is unchanged. Check the fixed-mm, fixed-kk, undamped assumptions before using this scaling.

A useful check on your next visit

Cover the labels and redraw the centre and both turning points. Add velocity, acceleration, KK and UU at each. Recalculate the x=0.6Ax=0.6A energy and speed fractions. Use the distinction you missed to choose your next chapter-practice question.

Choose your next chapter task

Explain the mistake behind any self-check you missed, then use chapter practice to test the corrected idea.
