What you will take away

  • Partial credit depends on the actual section rules and the possible set of correct options.
  • The value of keeping your current selection can also change across possible answer sets.
  • Historical Common Rank List checkpoints do not guarantee an IIT seat.

Start here if: Read the multiple-correct instructions and understand a simple weighted average.

Read the actual partial-credit rule

The 2025 multiple-correct instructions award full credit for the complete correct set, partial credit for specified correct subsets, and a penalty for other combinations. Both the number of actually correct options and your selected subset matter. A fixed “always stop at two” or confidence percentage does not replace those conditions.

Work through this example

Original teaching example. Use the 2025 rule. Suppose A and B are certainly correct, D is certainly wrong, and C is the only uncertainty. If C is correct, selecting AB earns +2 while ABC earns +4. If C is wrong, AB is the entire correct set and earns +4 while ABC earns −2. Let p be your probability that C is correct. Keeping AB has expected score 2p + 4(1 − p) = 4 − 2p; adding C has 4p − 2(1 − p) = 6p − 2. Adding C exceeds keeping AB only when p > 3/4 in this specific model.

Why the assumptions change the decision

Two possible answer sets in the original example
Actual correct setSelect ABSelect ABC
ABC+2+4
AB+4−2

At p = 1/2, keeping AB averages 3 marks while adding C averages 1. The baseline is not a guaranteed +2: it becomes +4 when AB is the whole correct set. If D were also uncertain or the marking scheme differed, the calculation would change. In practice, your confidence estimate can be poorly calibrated, so do not turn this example into a universal guessing rule.

These are exact observed CRL checkpoints. They do not substitute for the subject-wise qualification criteria or for JoSAA allocation. When checking a course, select the correct year, round, institution, program, quota and seat category in the official archive. No aggregate in this guide guarantees admission.

Practise the reading decision

Before answering a multiple-correct item, write which options you can justify and why the remaining ones are uncertain. Then read the section’s own marking rule. After the session, identify whether an error came from the subject reasoning or from misunderstanding the rule.

Use ten chapter questions to strengthen the prerequisite concepts. Use an official archived section separately for multiple-correct and partial-marking rehearsal. The general TopAll chapter bank does not claim to reproduce that full official section format.

Check your understanding

Why is comparing “adding C averages 6p − 2” with a constant +2 wrong in this example?

Show the reasoning

Because keeping AB earns +4 when C is wrong and AB is the whole correct set. Its expected value is 4 − 2p, not a constant +2. Both decisions must be evaluated across the same possible answer sets.

Your next study session

Practise, then review your mistakes

Suggested task: choose 10 available chapter questions, allowing about 15 minutes plus error review. Adjust the pace if you are learning the concept for the first time.

  1. Answer ten available questions without notes. This is a suggested task, not a separately filtered ten-question paper.
  2. For each error, record the concept, the step you missed and a short correction.
  3. Return to the same concept after a break and explain the correction before trying a new question.

The TopAll JEE chapter bank builds concept fluency. Use the official archived papers separately to rehearse their full section and marking format.

Frequently asked questions

Start with your question. Open an answer, then choose one study task to try.

Why is keeping AB not a guaranteed +2 in the example?

When C is wrong, AB is the complete correct set and earns +4 under the rule used. When C is correct, keeping AB earns +2. Its expected score is therefore 4 − 2p, not a constant +2.

Should I always add the uncertain option when confidence is above 75%?

No. That threshold belongs to the example’s exact two possible answer sets and specified marking rule. Different uncertainty, a different rule or poorly calibrated confidence changes the calculation.

Can a historical CRL checkpoint establish an IIT seat?

No. Keep marks, qualification requirements, rank and counselling allocation separate. For admission research, match the official year, round, institution, programme, quota and seat category.

What should I try in my next study session?

Compare two answer choices under a fully specified marking scenario and interpret a rank table. Work through the example, use the linked chapter practice and write one correction for each mistake before moving on.
