What you will take away
- At the exact CRL 5,001 checkpoint, the published aggregate varies from 115 in 2022 to 172 in 2024.
- A historical rank checkpoint is different from qualification or admission.
- Read every section’s instructions before deciding how to attempt it.

A five-year comparison you can trace
The table preserves the exact ranks printed in the official Joint Implementation Committee reports. CRL means Common Rank List. A checkpoint at 5,001 has not been relabelled as an exact top-5,000 boundary. The sources and PDF page numbers are listed below so you can reproduce the comparison.
| Year | CRL 501 | CRL 1,501 | CRL 5,001 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 237 | 198 | 145 |
| 2022 | 192 | 156 | 115 |
| 2023 | 242 | 203 | 153 |
| 2024 | 258 | 219 | 172 |
| 2025 | 234 | 193 | 145 |

The data, explained
Same checkpoint, different aggregate marks
Official aggregate marks at exactly CRL 5,001, 2021–2025. CRL means Common Rank List.
marks · scale starts at zero
Use this in your next mock: The observed range is 57 marks at this exact checkpoint. Keep the year attached to a marks-and-rank comparison.
The scale shows aggregate marks, not a percentage. One checkpoint does not establish the full rank distribution, explain difficulty on its own or guarantee admission.

- Spot the range
- At the exact CRL 5,001 checkpoint, the table ranges from 115 marks in 2022 to 172 in 2024: a difference of 57 marks.
- What it means for practice
- Keep the year attached to every marks-and-rank comparison. Use your own subject errors to plan revision instead of treating one aggregate as a permanent rank label.
- What it cannot tell you
- Five checkpoints do not give the entire marks/rank distribution, isolate one cause of variation or guarantee admission.
Evidence: 2022 JIC report and 2024 JIC report.
Try a multiple-statement data check
Select every statement supported by the table before opening the explanation.
- The difference between 172 and 115 is 57 marks.
- 150 marks always corresponds to the same rank.
- CRL 5,001 is one exact checkpoint, not the whole rank distribution.
- A past checkpoint guarantees an IIT seat in a later year.
Reveal the supported statements
A and C. The table supports the subtraction and the exact checkpoint label. It does not support a fixed future marks-to-rank conversion or an admission guarantee. For an actual multiple-correct paper, also read that section’s own credit and penalty rules.
What the variation means
The observed aggregate at CRL 5,001 is 145, 115, 153, 172 and 145 across these five years. The range is 57 marks. This establishes year-to-year variation at that checkpoint; it does not isolate paper difficulty as the only cause or predict a future outcome.
For personal planning, keep both subject-level and aggregate performance visible. A strong Physics/Maths total does not remove Chemistry or the examination’s subject-wise requirements. Read the relevant year’s qualification criteria separately from the rank table.
Work through this example
Original teaching example. Two students each score 150 in different hypothetical years. The historical table shows why a single marks-to-rank label cannot be carried across years. In the actual 2022 table, CRL 5,001 is 115; in 2024 it is 172. You cannot infer either student’s exact rank from these two checkpoints alone, but you can reject the claim that 150 always corresponds to one fixed rank.
Read the paper before importing a strategy
The official archive provides both papers for each year. Use the instructions for the particular section you are attempting: number of correct options, full credit, partial credit, negative marks and answer entry can differ by section. Do not apply one marking scheme to every question merely because it appeared in a previous paper.

For your next session, choose a concept you know and work through it carefully. Use TopAll’s general JEE chapter bank for concept practice, then use the official paper to rehearse the authentic section format. Record which concept or instruction caused each error.
Check your understanding
If CRL 5,001 required 145 marks in 2025, does 145 guarantee rank 5,001 or an IIT seat in a later year?
Show the reasoning
No. It is one observed checkpoint in a specific year. It does not establish the entire marks/rank distribution, future competition, eligibility or counselling allocation.
Your next study session
Practise, then review your mistakes
Suggested task: choose 10 available chapter questions, allowing about 15 minutes plus error review. Adjust the pace if you are learning the concept for the first time.
- Answer ten available questions without notes. This is a suggested task, not a separately filtered ten-question paper.
- For each error, record the concept, the step you missed and a short correction.
- Return to the same concept after a break and explain the correction before trying a new question.
The TopAll JEE chapter bank builds concept fluency. Use the official archived papers separately to rehearse their full section and marking format.

Frequently asked questions
Start with your question. Open an answer, then choose one study task to try.
Does CRL 5,001 mean the same thing as an exact top-5,000 boundary?
No. This guide preserves the exact checkpoint printed in the reports: CRL 5,001. Relabelling it changes the meaning of the evidence.
Can 150 marks mean the same rank every year?
No fixed rank follows from these checkpoints. At CRL 5,001 the table records 115 marks in 2022 and 172 in 2024. That shows variation, but it does not provide every candidate’s rank or a future conversion.
Does TopAll chapter practice reproduce every Advanced question format?
No. The general JEE chapter bank supports concept practice. Use the official archived papers separately to rehearse their particular question formats, section instructions and marking rules.
Which rolling task should follow this Advanced guide?
Try the companion rolling-versus-slipping lesson in this study path. Determine the contact-point velocity before imposing a no-slip constraint, then check the assumptions behind any energy calculation.
