Morning or afternoon study: compare a workable routine

Understand the limits of school-timing research and use a simple session log to compare practical study times around your own routine.

Published 20/10/2026 · Updated 20/10/2026

There is no single timetable for every student

School, travel, meals, household responsibilities and access to a quiet space constrain when study can happen. Start with those real conditions. A routine that can be followed is more useful for planning than a universal claim that morning or afternoon study is best.

What one primary study examined

Goldin and colleagues’ 2020 study examined 753 Argentinian students assigned to morning, afternoon or evening school schedules. It found that the relationship between chronotype and school performance differed with school timing. Chronotype concerns the timing of a person’s daily sleep–wake preference.

This was research on school schedules and grades in a particular setting, not an experiment showing the best home-study hour for Indian NEET or JEE candidates. It does not justify a promised attendance improvement or score increase from switching a revision session.

Try a simple planning comparison

The following is an editorial worksheet, not a scientific test or a treatment. Choose feasible slots that do not require cutting needed rest or missing school commitments. Use comparable tasks where possible and record the conditions rather than judging a session only by how productive it felt.

RecordExample
Time and taskAfter school: review a short Physics question set
Work completedQuestions attempted and corrections explained
ConditionsInterruptions, available space and how tired you felt
Next stepRetry a calculation or ask a teacher about the model

Review the routine with your household

After trying the available sessions, discuss which were practical and which repeatedly conflicted with other responsibilities. Move a demanding task or shorten an unrealistic session rather than assuming the student lacks discipline. Different tasks may fit different times.

Keep the plan flexible around examinations, travel and school requirements. A parent can help protect agreed study time and reduce interruptions. If persistent tiredness or sleep difficulties are affecting everyday life, discuss them with a qualified health professional instead of relying on a study-timetable article.

About this revision

Revised to remove attendance and tardiness percentages that had no identifiable study or sample.
